Cool Days

So, this is my first blog. Well, not exactly my first blog. I had one a number of years ago. This is my first blog of another attempt at blogging.

Today was a very autumn-like day. So was yesterday, in fact. Weird for the first day of September, although quite fitting since fall is only a few weeks away. Why do I say "autumn" at one moment and then "fall" the very next? Funny how we use different words to mean the same thing, and yet, it is completely unnecessary. Why don't we just use one word instead of crowding our brains with extensive vocabulary? I don't really mean that. I love words. But I also love efficiency, and it seems to me that we should just take a vote on whether we should use "fall" or "autumn" and do away with the other. This would alleviate the burden for anyone learning the English language. I don't really mean that either. Having a wider selection of words with the same or similar meaning adds nuance to communication...subtext...

"He threw out my chocolate bar in the Thames! But he doesn't remember, and says he never did it."

My grandma told me of a time she had purchased a chocolate bar, which at that time was a rare luxury. She did not often indulge herself, but this particular day she had a lovely little package of sweet goodness. My grandpa, who has always been an advocate of healthy living, prefers his sweet tooth to be satisfied by fresh oranges chilled in the refrigerator. One day, many years ago, my grandparents were walking along together when my grandma pulled out her delicious treat, probably offering to share it with her husband. According to her account, he grabbed it from her, threw it in the Thames and said she should not eat that garbage! She says she should have taken that as a sign that their marriage would not last. I'm not so sure I agree with that, but then again, don't mess with a woman's chocolates!

This evening I sat beside her and she sat beside my grandpa who sat beside my mother who sat beside my father, and we watched Julie and Julia together at the movie theater. We decided to celebrate my grandpa's birthday with a little outing. The credits rolled, and my grandpa woke up from his nap and she patted him on the back. She's forgiven him for throwing out her candy bar all those years ago (I think).
